In my mid-thirties, with two small children, I started to write more family-based mysteries and dramas, and in my forties I finally embraced the dark side and began to kill my characters. In my twenties I was writing romantic comedies. My novels have changed as steadily and incrementally as my life has. I wrote it in my big house where I live with my husband, our two teenage daughters, dog and cat and there are no days when I’m not writing as I’m a full-time writer. I wrote my nineteenth novel, The Night She Disappeared, at the grand old age of 52. On the days when I wasn’t writing, I was working as secretary in a human resources department. I wrote it in a small apartment where I lived with my boyfriend and cat. I wrote my first book, Ralph’s Party, when I was a mere child of 27.

His Heartbeat A Monster/Curvy Girl Romance But while some writers cushion their harder-to-believe stories, Walls leans into the absurdity of her childhood. We all have stories that ring false to outsiders because they contain unlikely events or a turn of luck. I don’t care whether Walls’s stories are strictly “true.” Memoirists can take liberties. Some reviewers have questioned her memory-how accurately do you remember your time as a three-year-old?-but I won’t. Walls writes herself as a rational and well-spoken three-year-old. She’s taken to the hospital, but her father sneaks her out early to avoid paying. The Glass Castle opens as a three-year-old Jeannette Walls boils hotdogs for dinner and accidentally sets herself on fire. True to genre, The Glass Castle is a litany of obstacles in the form of abusive, neglectful parents and grinding poverty. Memoirists can paint their histories however they choose, but it’s near impossible for misery porn to not be a self-indulgent humble-brag: Look how independent I was look how I persevered. Misery porn is a sub-genre of memoir built around the thesis: My childhood was worse than yours, but I’m going to be cavalier about it so you know how tough I am. The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls is misery porn. "McClung has an impressive ability to write compelling characters and a fast paced and action packed plot that never seems to let up." -Speculative Book Review Time is running out for the small, scarred thief. Meanwhile, Nash’s ex-girlfriend, Sabine, has moved into the area and tells Kaylee upfront that she’s there to take Nash back. She refuses to resolve anything between them until Nash is free of frost, the demon’s breath drug that he became addicted to, due to an accident caused by Kaylee. Kaylee and Nash are in relationship limbo a few weeks after My Soul to Keep (book 3). I was excited yet apprehensive about this book because I knew-and the blurb implies-that there would be some kind of relationship triangle between Kaylee, Nash and Nash’s ex, Sabine. My Soul to Steal is the fourth book of Rachel Vincent’s Soul Screamers series.
